Country: Jordan

Status: Completed

Issue:
The cities of Fuheis and Mahis faced significant environmental challenges due to inadequate wastewater management. Without a proper wastewater collection system and treatment facilities, both cities struggled with pollution and inefficient water use, particularly impacting agricultural practices and local ecosystems.

Initiative:
To address these issues, SAJDI was tasked with preparing environmental studies, detailed design, and tender documents, followed by the construction supervision of a comprehensive new wastewater collection system and treatment plant. The project components included:

  • Design and supervision of a 98 km wastewater collection system tailored to the needs of Fuheis and Mahis.
  • Development of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 2400 m³/day to efficiently manage daily flow.
  • Construction of a 4 km sewer siphon to facilitate effective waste transport.
  • Installation of two crucial sewage pumping stations and a force main to support the robust functioning of the system.
  • Creation of 20,000 m³ maturation lagoons to enhance water purification before reuse.
  • Implementation of an effluent irrigation scheme to utilize treated water for irrigation purposes, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Benefits:
The successful completion of this project brought multiple benefits to Fuheis and Mahis:

  • Improved Environmental Health: Reduced pollution and environmental degradation through efficient wastewater treatment.
  • Enhanced Water Management: Enabled the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation, conserving freshwater resources and supporting agricultural activities.
  • Boost in Agricultural Productivity: The effluent irrigation scheme provided a reliable water source for farming, boosting agricultural productivity and sustainability.
  • Infrastructure Enhancement: Upgraded infrastructure with a new wastewater system improved the overall living conditions and health standards of the local population.
